The Card Nobody Thinks to Send (But Should)

The Card Nobody Thinks to Send (But Should)

On "just because" and why the unexpected ones matter most.

There's a birthday card for every birthday. A sympathy card for every loss. A thank you card for every gift received.

But what about the Tuesday in March when you thought of someone and smiled? What about the friend who's been having a hard year and hasn't said much about it? What about the neighbour who brought you soup when you were sick, three months ago, and you never quite got around to saying thank you properly?

There's no card section for that.

And yet — those are often the moments that matter most.

I've been making greeting cards long enough to know that the ones people remember aren't always the ones tied to an occasion. Sometimes it's the card that arrived on an ordinary Wednesday with no explanation other than I was thinking of you. Sometimes it's the one that said I see you when the sender had no idea how much that was needed.

Those cards don't require a birthday. They don't need a holiday. They just need someone willing to pick up a pen and say: you matter to me, and I wanted you to know.

If someone has been on your mind lately — a friend you haven't talked to in a while, a parent who's getting older, a colleague who's been quietly struggling — maybe that's your sign.

You don't need a reason. The thought itself is reason enough.
